I am using Word 2007. I have written a book that I would like to submit to publishers as one file. I have successfully combined four files into one file I'll call front matter. Next comes the one text file containing many chapters separated by continuous section breaks. Then, I have one file containing four combined files. So now I have three files that I wish to combine into one. I do this the standard way (insert, object, text from file, combine). The result is a combined file but all the endnotes that I assigned to each chapter, that followed each continuous section break, (text file) now separate out and rest at the bottom of this combined document.
Question: Is there an easy way of fixing this middle text file so that the endnotes stay in place when I combine the three files? I would prefer not to strip out all the endnotes, one by one, and paste them back after combining the files. Thanks. |

Tell the endnotes that you want them for each section.

I'm not a wiz at this thing, Charles. How do I tell the endnotes that I want them for each section? Could you be more specific? Thanks.

Make sure that there is a section break between each chapter. Right-click in the endnote text area and choose Note Options. In the Footnote and Endnote dialog box, specify that you want endnotes at the end of each section.

Thank you, Stefan and Charles. The option to apply the section breaks to the entire combined document needs to be done after all documents are combined. I did that and fooled around a bit with it and it worked. An earlier attempt to do the same resulted in failure. This might have happened because I also attempted to insert page numbers into the text document before combining. This time, I skipped that part and it worked. However, a few of the endnores in the footer area were duplicated. For example, a normal-sized number might be preceded by one or two smaller sized numbers. It seems that I can simply delete these extra numbers.
I now need to number all the pages as instructed by the publisher. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Sorry, I mistakenly cross-posted - didn't mean to. I'll correct this before preceding. George |
